March 6, 2010: As many of you know, there were significant changes to New York's Power of Attorney statute as of September 2009.  Please be careful in executing new powers of attorney.  A power of attorney is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to ensure that your family can care for you if you are incapacitated: It is certainly less expensive than a guardianship proceeding.  That being said, the new power of attorney form is more complex than the old form and automatically revokes all your earlier powers of attorney.  Please be sure to review all of your bank, brokerage and insurance arrangements before you execute a new form.
